March Goodness 2011 Dream4College Campaign, March 24 – April 12th
For many potential “1st generation to college” students, preparing for college is like preparing to go to Mars. They’ve never seen a college and have no idea how to prepare for such a journey. Can anyone be inspired by a vision for a “preferable future” that they cannot presently see or imagine? Our annual March Goodness Dream 4 College Project provides a clear vision for low income fifth and sixth grade students of what their future can look like by enabling them to experience “College for a Day” at Stanford and more.
“I wish I could go back and do it over again. I wish I knew then what I know now,” shared a Fremont High School student in our youth mentoring program last week. Fatima (not her real name) just dropped out of school to pursue her G.E.D.. Despite not graduating, she is working on a fresh start by fading out of her gang, staying off drugs and working with us on job training skills. Our hope is to reach and inspire youth like Fatima before they slide too far down the slippery slope of dropping out of school.
With 25% of public school students not graduating in California and close to 40% of African-American and Latino students not graduating in Santa Clara County, Reach Potential is partnering with three low-income Mountain View schools to inspire 200 youth to “dream for college,” but we need your help!
We need friends to come together to sponsor a youth for $35 or to sponsor 5 youth for $175, 10 youth for $350, etc. so that all 200 youth may receive a…
- Field trip to experience “College for a Day” at Stanford
- College T-shirt from their sponsor’s alma mater to foster a college-going identity
- Help with their College Exploration Research Project
- Parent Program on the Stanford trip for 1st Generation-to-College families
Dream4College Sponsors – To give a donation of $10, $20, $35 (full sponsorship) or whatever amount you want to sponsor a youth to experience “College for a Day,” please click here on our Razoo Dream4College Campaign link. Remember to indicate your own college so that we’ll order a shirt representing your alma-mater for the youth you’ll sponsor. Please consider promoting your sponsorship through email, facebook, twitter, etc. or by becoming a Dream4College Champion…
Dream4College Champions – Champion our cause of low income youth experiencing “College for a Day” by bringing friends together to sponsor several students! In 10 minutes you can create your own “sponsor page” (Go to “create a page” under Join this Team on the right side bar when you click here). For fun you can upload an optional photo of you and/or your friends from college, work, church or whoever you’ll ask to join you in giving $10-$20 to help sponsor (for example) 5 youth for $175. Consider asking your company to offer a matching gift and encourage your friends to also indicate their colleges when they donate as we’ll provide every youth a college T-shirt from their sponsor’s alma-mater. Dream4College Coaches – This year we’re also adding a Coach element. We need 25 “Coaches” who will invest two lunch hours in May to share with 2-4 Mountain View fifth graders their personal experience and help these youth discover the possibility of college. Please contact us if you would like to be a Coach through our website at http://rpmovement.org/contactus/
